The Heterogenous Cloud: Comparing Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, Google App Engine and Your Own Servers

Lecturer: Don Alvarez, Accelerated Pictures, Inc.

Amazon, Microsoft and Google are working very hard to change the way you think about your data center. Each of the major providers sees the data center problem from a completely different perspective driven by the differences in their own corporate histories. Which of those vision(s) is the best fit to the needs of your project?

You may know that Amazon will let you spin up new servers on demand for $0.10/hour. Do you understand what that means for your own development efforts? Do you know which problems the Google App Engine is designed to solve or what development costs does Azure targets most aggressively? Join us as we compare and contrast the major cloud computing platforms and discuss their applicability for hosting game servers.

By the end of the talk, you should understand a vision of cloud computing that involves converting capital expenses to operating expenses, allows for elastic consumption of resources in response to variations in user demand, and is available in a variety of forms from a variety of different service providers.
